Ukraine reports that Russia launched 67 drones in an overnight attack.
KYIV, Sept 7 (Reuters) – On Saturday, Ukraine's air force reported that Russia carried out a mass overnight attack, launching a total of 67 long-range Shahed drones, of which 58 were successfully intercepted.
In a statement on Telegram, the air force detailed that air defense units were deployed across 11 regions in Ukraine to counter the attack.
Drone debris was discovered near the parliament building in Kyiv, as noted in a separate statement and accompanied by photographs posted on the legislature's official Telegram page.
It is unusual for Russian missiles or drones to penetrate so deeply into central Kyiv, given the city’s robust defense network comprised of both Soviet-era and Western-supplied systems. The government quarter in the city center, which includes the president's office, the cabinet, and the central bank, is particularly well-protected.
Photographs on Telegram revealed at least four pieces of debris near the parliament building, including fragments of a Russian kamikaze drone. One piece was found at the base of the building’s main entrance steps, while another showed significant shrapnel damage.
Reuters correspondents in Kyiv reported hearing a series of explosions around 3 a.m. on Saturday, with some blasts resonating throughout the city center and waking residents.
Since the beginning of its invasion in February 2022, Russia has launched thousands of missiles and Shahed drones at Ukraine.
